LADY'S MANTLE

(Alchemilla Vulgaris)

 

It is a non-lignified perennial plant, reaching up to 50 cm in height.  The plant blossoms from May to September. It grows on moist meadows, near forests, paths, in deciduous forest, near streams and rivers up to 2.500m ASL.

During its blooming period, we collect the above-ground parts of the plant or just the leaves.

The lady's mantle is considered a women's herb, since it effectively helps with female-specific problems, such as  leucorrhoea, menstruation management, problems experienced during menopause; it is also a cherished aid in healing of wounds, it has anti-inflammatory effects and it arrests bleeding (helping tissues to contract and strengthen), which is a basic step in the wound healing; it is used against diarrhoea; in the herbal medicine books of the 16th Century it was regarded as the best treatment for wounds.

 

 

THYME

Thymus Vulgaris

 

It is a non-lignified perennial herb. It grows into a small shrub, most often cushion- or carpet-like. It grows up to 30 cm of height. It blossoms from May to September. It grows on dry and sunny spots, meadows, gardens, forest clearings and embankments.

 

It is a very effective means to treat chest inflammations, such as bronchitis, whooping cough, pleurisy; prepared as a tea it can be applied to threat mild tonsillitis and pneumonia; fresh leaves can be chewed to aid with tonsillitis; it prevents convulsions with stomach and intestinal diseases; it deters intestinal parasites and acts as a mild sedative, increases perspiration and mildly dehydrates the body; when used internally and externally it functions as an antiseptic; research shows that thyme and its essential oil strengthen bodily functions and slow down aging, soothe insect stings and also help with scabs, athlete's foot, mycosis, scabies and lice.

 

 

ST. JOHN'S WORT

Hypericum Perforatum

It is a shrubby perennial plant, growing from 30 to 90 cm in height. The shrubs will reach up to 30 cm in diameter.  It blossoms from June to September.
It is most often found on forest clearings, at forest brims, meadows and barren land. It thrives on ancient igneous rocks, as well as limestone soil.
The blossoms are gathered as soon as they open or we can collect the whole plant, in effect harvesting with approx. 25 cm of additional greenery.
The tea made of leaves and blossoms acts as an antidepressant, relieves hysteria, melancholy, headaches and insomnia, purifies blood and heals the kidneys, bladder and lung problems. The most common external use of St. Johns wort takes form of: oils, creams and other ointments that are used with great success to treat burns, swellings, scalds, smaller lesions, strike wounds and sprains; if massaged or rubbed in, they will alleviate rheumatic and gout problems; they are also effective if used to massage the spine, damaged vertebrae and joints; they ease insect sting related problems, and they are also highly recommended for the elderly to rub in to treat trembling of limbs.

KIDNEY VETCH

(Anthyllis Vulneraria)

The beneficial properties of the kidney vetch are most often employed to heal wounds (note: Slovenian name of the plant is derived from the word for wound). It can be found on dry meadows in many places across Slovenia, and between May and June, you can easily identify it by its yellow inflorescence.
It is a very popular herb in folk medicine. As one could guess from its name, the plant is used mostly to treat human as well as animal wounds. Kidney vetch tea purifies the blood. It also strengthens the stomach in people with irritable digestive system.

OREGANO

(Origanum Vulgare)

It is a perennial herb of 35 to 75 cm in height. It blossoms from July to September.
We use the blossoming herb, gathered from July till September.
This is a medicinal herb with extraordinarily gentle action. It regulates the stomach function, liver and bile secretion; it soothes stomach spasms, arrests diarrhoea, prevents swelling and is a mild disinfectant; strengthens the functions of internal organs and the nervous system; has an appeasing effect and increases perspiration; it is recommended to calm strong, convulsive coughing; it is often an ingredient of the autumn teas and teas against cold; if prepared by scalding it is suitable for gargling and rinsing of swollen mucous membranes, mouth and throat.

WILLOW HERB

Epilobium Parviflorum

The willow herb can be identified by its tiny reddish, pale pink or almost white blossoms.
The whole plant is collected, the stem with leaves and blossoms.
It is used to treat diseased prostate as it contains hormones that regulate the function of the gland, also used to treat kidneys and urinary bladder.
